I'm Ben Pearlman and I am running for reelection for Boulder County Commissioner in 2008.
Four years ago, I ran for office because I wanted to preserve our land and local environment,
enhance our quality of life, and improve our commitment to human services. I'm very proud
of what this Board of Commissioners has done over the past four years – we've engaged in
substantive debates, we've made wise and responsible decisions, and we've done our best to
live up to the expectations and needs of Boulder County residents. There's still a lot more work to be done and I look forward to the next four years.
In my
first term as commissioner we took on a number of issues: we reworked our budget process
to ensure that our spending closely matches our values and priorities, we set out on a
comprehensive overhaul of our land use code to make it clearer and easier to understand,
we developed a human services master plan to figure out how to work with nonprofits to best
deliver services to our most vulnerable residents, and we dedicated ourselves to set the
standard for what can be done locally to address global climate change.
In Boulder County we have preserved our rural and agricultural lands, built the strongest
open space program in the state, and forged agreements with local cities and towns to
establish where growth will occur. The result is less sprawl, a lot more protected open
space, better recreational opportunities, and more room for wildlife – and a stronger local economy.
We need commissioners who will continue to preserve our land, water, and environment.
Boulder County is also home to a tremendously strong network of nonprofits that together
provide support for residents in their times of need. It's nothing short of amazing to
see how well these organizations work, but even so in recent years we've seen a growing
rift in our County between people with means and those who struggle to make ends meet.
We need County Commissioners who will dedicate themselves to making sure that all residents
have access to education, food, shelter, and medical care – and a fair chance to improve
their circumstances and share in the high quality of life we enjoy in Boulder County.
You can read a brief summary of my positions on what I believe are the critical issues
on the On the Issues page.
